What is Pay-Per-Click Advertising?

What is Pay-Per-Click Advertising?

Writen by Adrian Mullan

As we've discussed, targeted traffic is the lifeblood of any website.

And while it is definitely worth optimizing your website for the search engines, you're likely to come across the following obstacles:

1) It takes time. It will typically take at least a couple of months before your website starts showing up in the search engines.

2) The top positions in any search engine can be very competitive. This means when your site does get listed, you'll usually start off lower down the list of search results.

This is where Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising can be a real life saver.

Pay-Per-Click advertising is the fastest way to start driving quality traffic to your website.

What is Pay-Per-Click Advertising?

A commonly asked question about the Internet is:

'How do Search Engines make money?'

The answer is simple - search engines make their money by selling advertising space to website owners.

This type of advertising is known as 'Pay-Per-Click' and it is a very effective and affordable form of promotion.

The concept of Pay-Per-Click (also known as 'pay-per-performance' or 'paid search') is based around the simple concept of matching buyers with sellers.

How does Pay-Per-Click Work?

When someone types in a keyword or keyword phrase into a search engine, they receive two kinds of results; Natural Results and Sponsored Results.

Search engine optimization focuses on improving your ranking in the natural results. Pay-Per-Click advertising focuses on the sponsored results area.

Natural Results (also know as 'Organic Results')

Natural results are free listings which are generated from the search engine's database. They are also sometimes referred to as 'organic results'.

The characteristics of natural results are:

- Listings are free. Website owners don't pay to be listed in the natural results.

- There are often millions of results for each topic, but most web surfers don't go past the first 30 results.

- With popular search terms the competition can be fiercely aggressive for the top positions.

- You have no control over the results - your position is determined by a search engine ranking formula (also known as an 'algorithm').

- You can, however, use legitimate Search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to give yourself a better chance of getting a good position (refer to search engine optimization).

Sponsored Results (also know as 'Paid Results')

The second type of result is Sponsored Results.

The characteristics of sponsored results are:

- Listings are paid for by advertisers.

- Listings appear at the top of the page and along the right hand side of the screen.

- Unlike natural search results, you get to specify your ad description and the keywords that make your ad appear.

Differences Between Sponsored and Natural Results

1. Fast set-up

Sponsored results can be set-up immediately, whereas natural results often take months to show a new site listing.

2. You have total control over your ads

You control the appearance of your ad, what position it appears in and how often it is displayed to web surfers.

Once you have your ad up and running, you are free to update it whenever your want. This differs from the natural search results where you have no control over your listing or its position.

3. You choose the keywords that your ad will appear for

Sponsored results allow you to specify exactly which keywords your ad will appear for. You can also specify which keywords you do not want your ad to appear for.

For example, if you sold Harley Davidson motorbikes then you'd want you ad to show up for searches related to 'Harleys' or 'Harley Bikes'.

At the same time, you wouldn't want your ad to show up for other searches that include the word 'bike' like 'mountain bikes' or 'racing bikes'.

4. You determine how much you are willing to spend

Pay-Per-Click advertising allows you to specify exactly what you're willing to spend on a daily basis. Generally, the higher you bid, the higher your ad will appear on the page.

What is Pay-Per-Click?

What is Pay-Per-Click?

Writen by F. Terrence Markle

Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising is when an advertiser pays for each qualified click that sends a search engine user (i.e., visitor) to the advertiser’s web page. PPC requires the advertiser to bid on key words or key word phrases chosen by the advertiser. There are many PPC advertising services available to choose from. Google AdWords and Overture are probably the two most popular in use today.

The PPC search engine allows you to buy a top position in the search engine results for the particular keyword or phrase you choose. The PPC search engines can deliver targeted and qualified visitors to your web page at an economical advertising cost if you manage the program carefully with a clear objective. PPC provides the advertiser with assurance that their ad is being delivered to the targeted audience.

PPC advertising uses a bidding process where the highest bidder or highest activity value, depending on the search engine, for a particular keyword or phrase will receive the top placement on the search engine results page. The PPC search engine will place your ad text in a special location on the results page when a user searches on your PPC keyword or phrase search term.

As an example, Google AdWords appear on the right side of the search results page while the organic (i.e., natural) search results appear on the left side of the page. In the case of Yahoo! Search, the sponsored ads appear on both the left and right side of the search results page. The top 2-3 sponsored ads appear in the top positions on the left side above the natural search results and the next 3 sponsored ads appear at the bottom of the left side and on the right side of the search results page along with other sponsored ads.

PPC advertising is a good way to obtain web page visitors when you don’t have a top ranking web page to get you the necessary natural search engine placement. Statistics show that over 80% of search engine users prefer the natural search results as opposed to sponsored ads. Nevertheless, the search engines deliver a huge amount of visitor traffic to the sponsored advertisers especially in the competitive keyword markets.

The typical PPC advertising campaign is based on the bid per click. For example, you bid $0.10 for a particular keyword or phrase that is accepted by the search engine. Whenever a search engine user clicks on your sponsored ad then you are charged $0.10 by the search engine. This amount is deducted from your account funds. Your placement in the search engine results page depends on the search engine. For Google, the placement is determined by your bid price and the ad’s click-through activity. For Yahoo, the placement is determined by your bid relative to other bids.

PPC can be an excellent method for getting visitor traffic to your web site but it can also cost you a lot of money. You need to be extremely careful and monitor your cost of using PPC versus the revenue generated. As the old saying goes, do the math. Calculate your return on investment (ROI) on a continuous basis to determine if you are making a profit on your PPC campaign.

As an example, assume your bid for a particular keyword is $0.10 and the product you sell has a profit margin of $15 after product costs (excluding PPC costs). If your conversion rate (the number of visitors that buy your product) is 1.0%, only 1 of your visitors will buy your product out of 100 visitors. Your net profit for every 100 visitors from your PPC campaign will be $5 ($15 profit margin less $10 for PPC).

It is a good idea to experiment with the different PPC search engines to find the one that works best for you. In addition, you need to spend the necessary time and effort to select the keyword or keyword phrase that has a profitable conversion rate for your specific web page. A higher conversion rate implies more profits to you.

Try to avoid the senseless bidding war with your competitors. Seriously evaluate whether having the number one placement position is worth the PPC price you pay. What about position numbers two, three and so on. Will you get enough clicks in one of those positions to make your PPC campaign a success? Do not automatically assume that you have to be in position number one to make a lot of money using PPC. It all comes down to experimenting and testing.

There is no such thing as the perfect PPC campaign. Evaluate the performance of your PPC campaigns on a continuous basis. Are you leaving money on the table by not adjusting your PPC bid to a lower level? Should you increase the bid price to get more traffic? Is your conversion rate changing? What are your competitors doing? Should you be considering different keywords in your campaign? PPC advertising is a great way to get traffic but at a definite price. PPC requires a thorough knowledge of the PPC search engines that you use and constant monitoring and evaluation of your campaigns.

What Is Google Adsense ?

What Is Google Adsense ?

Writen by Christopher Ruane

Adsense for content and searches

Google Adsense for Search is different than Adsense for Content but it is just as important to your earning power with the Google Adsense program.

Just like Adsense for Content places targeted ads on your content pages, Adsense for Search places targeted ads on the results page of the search set in motion on your page.

You can use the standard Google search box on your site and the user can then search the web or even your site. When you feel more comfortable, you can change the look of the Google search box, essentially customizing it by changing the colors and using your logo.

The best thing about Google Adsense for Search is that you can track what your visitors are searching for. That is, if the search has two or more hits. Unique queries will not be tracked. But you can see the top 25 searches performed from your website by clicking on the Advance Report from the Reports tab and specifying a date range.

Like anything else, you’ll get out of Google Adsense what you put into it. The following optimization tips can help you grow your Google Adsense dollars:

Write interesting content and write every day.

Have more than one site. The more sites you have, the more ads have the potential to get clicked.

Set up channels and monitor your statistics across all sites. If one site is performing poorly, consider changing the content or the ad layout.

Experiment!

Change the ad layout and notice which layout works the best for you. There are many different layout options and there’s no way you can know going in which one will perform the best.

If you’re blogging, writingup.com has a list of profitable topics. They state that you don’t have to write on those topics but you might give it a try or at least plug some of them in to the search engines.

Google different key words and phrases and notice how much and what kinds of content and ads you see.

How to Apply to the Google Adsense Program

Applying for a Google Adsense account is quick and easy for any interested webmaster. Just point your browser to www.google.com/adsense and click on apply. Click on the drop down arrow under account type and select whether you’re an individual or business. If you’re not sure which one to choose, click on the question mark to the left. Next, select your country or territory.

Under website information, it asks for your primary URL. If you have your own website, list it here. If you are using a blogging site such as writingup.com or bloggingparty.com that URL goes here.

Select your website’s primary language. Google adsense supports Chinese (simplified), Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

Select the product you want on your pages. Adsense for Content means you will have advertising targeted to the content on your pages. For instance, if you write about flooring, you might have carpet ads on your page. Adsense for Search is for you to add a Google search box to your pages. To maximize your Google Adsense earnings, you will want to have both.

After that, it’s just the regular contact information and you’re all set. You should receive an email in 2 or 3 days letting you know if your application is approved.

Do I Have to Pay Taxes on My Google Adsense Earnings?

Google Adsense is required to collect tax information from those who participate in the program. If you’re a business, you’ll need to put your EIN number on your application. If you’re an individual, all you’ll need is your social security number. If you don’t have that information when you initially sign up, you can still apply for the Google Adsense program. But be advised that Google Adsense will withhold payments to you until they receive your tax information.

While Google does not withhold taxes or provide any tax advice, they will send you a 1099 once your earnings reach a certain amount. Of course, if you are a Non-US business and have no activity in the United States, you will not need to provide this information. For more tax information regarding the Google Adsense program, visit the Google Adsense Support site. For other tax-related questions or concerns, you can log onto www.irs.gov.

What Can Adsense Do For You?

What Can Adsense Do For You?

Writen by Hege Crowton

In three words, earn you money. More relevant ads on your pages translate into more clicks and more money that you receive. Because when users click on an ad, Google will pay you. If you have set up your own sales team, you will get an additional benefit: AdSense complements their effort. It does not compete with them.

With AdSense, you get a report page that lets you know how your ads are doing and what they bring in.

Google have ads for all kinds of businesses and for every type of content.. You can also use AdSense in many languages..

AdSense has the ability to deliver relevant ads because the gurus at Google understand how web pages really work and they are continuously refining their technology.

When you put a Google search box on your site you start making money off of web searchers that people do on your site. This ability to search off of your page keeps them on your site longer, because they can search from right there where they are. It will only take you a few minutes to get AdSense up and running.

The best part, of course, is that AdSense is free for you to use.

You can increase you income substantially by using AdSense.

I was able to learn so much about this from a very easy to follow handbook called:

“Building Your Own Adsense Empire.” It is a “must have” book for all of you who wants to get into AdSense.

The Adsense Experience

The Adsense Experience

Writen by Yigit Djevdet

First Things First

Adsense has been around since 2003 but I'd have to be honest and say that I only heard about it some weeks ago when a friend suggested I put a few links on my website. So I enquired about it on Google's site and opened an account. I agreed to the long disclaimer with all the rules and regulations and to be brutally honest didn't read much of it. However, I was able to ascertain very quickly the main principles of how the program works and I have to admit none of it inspired me all that much, but it was still worth trying it out.

In case you are wondering, here are the salient points on what Adsense is about. You sign up to receive payment from Google every time a visitor clicks on an Adsense ad at your website. Google prepares the ads and you simply cut and paste the html code onto your website. Google then serves various advertisements and over time these change though the whole point is that the adverts are geared towards the subject depicted at your site. The idea is that your visitors are then deemed to be targeted audience which means they are more likely to click on these adverts. The so-called win-win situation.

So What Happened

I opened the account on 19th January 2006 and Google disabled it on the 31st. They wrote to me explaining that it had come to their attention that invalid clicks had been generated on the ads at my site. They were absolutely right and I wrote back to apologise and thank them for returning the $14 back to the relevant advertisers. I also explained that my 3 young children were mostly responsible for the clicks because all three have access to my computer. But I have to say that I myself also clicked on the ads because I wanted to know what it was I was advertising. It's all very well Google wanting to safeguard its name and reputation but surely they must recognise that the same is true of webmasters. In fact, I didn't actually like most of the web pages that the Adsense links were bringing up.

My website is dedicated to a new paranormal stroke science-fiction novel of which I am the author. We all know that the system that tries to match adverts to one's website is a moronic robot that simply does a comparison on words without appreciation of meaning and context. Why do I say that? Well on clicking some of these ads, I was transported to sites about tarot reading, faith healing, astrology and religious exposition to name but a few. And all because I had the words paranormal and supernatural at my site.

My point is that I firmly think webmasters should have the right to click on their own adverts because I don't believe in simply trusting Google's robots to serve relevant or appropriate material all the time. If one felt strongly about a certain link or ad, the site owner can then make an informed representation to Google to either retune their robot or to intervene manually to remove it. I know that most webmasters probably don't care one bit where the adverts lead so long as they can make money from it but surely this stance is irresponsible and may in the long run damage the reputation of the webmaster if he or she has any aspirations about the future of their website.

But I know what you are thinking at this stage. If webmaster's were allowed to click on their own adverts, doesn't that open the way for false clicking to generate false income? Of course it does and if it were allowed to happen, no doubt it would lead to the eventual erosion of the Adsense program. But hear this. If Google is able to tell so quickly and so efficiently who is clicking on their own adverts, all they have to do is put a simple condition in the program code that stops the generation of income if the click came from the webmaster's computer.

It's plainly obvious that there is a fairly sophisticated system in place to look out for certain patterns in the computer IP addresses from which the clicks are instigated. This is to stop not only the webmasters from clicking on their own ads but also their associates, friends, relatives and such like from doing it as well. If some of these patterns emerge from the clicking at your website, your account is automatically disabled and I believe even the email that goes out is automated. I find it astounding that Google will not put in place some kind of a check to ensure that false-clicking is not rewarded but instead opts for this Gestapo-style termination at the drop of a hat. This way the conscientious webmaster would be kept happy because they are free to check the adverts themselves and the advertisers are also happy because they will not be charged for false clicking.

So Why Doesn't Google Do This?

I don't know is the short answer and I don't suppose they would tell us if we asked them. As you would expect, I do have a theory. The first thing I would say about Google is that my admiration for them was boundless when they were simply a search engine. They are still the fastest, the most accurate and the biggest as far as this part of the operation is concerned. However, since diving into the deep blue ocean of profit-making several things began to change and there is no shortage of websites, blogs and forums to tell you about it. Google grew too quickly. It is still revelling in its own success and is showing signs of being absolutely petrified about losing it. It is absolutely paranoid about its reputation with advertisers so it will cut anyone else or anything else into shreds if necessary to safeguard this relationship. It knows that those webmasters that make sizeable income from the Adsense program need Google more than Google needs them. You know the adage I'm reminded of. Yes you've guessed it. "Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely". In fact, I have no trouble in comparing Google to a teenage pop star who suddenly has more worth that he can possibly handle. The only way, I'm afraid, is down.

For those of you that are using the Adsense program and making money, please carry on. I do not in anyway want to discourage you from doing this but at the same time it does no harm to be informed about what is going on.

In the meantime, for us small fish, here is a website dedicated to my book which is a supernatural come science-fiction novel. Please click on http://www.willofdreams.com to visit and learn more about the author and the book. Thank you for your attention

Not So Secret Adsense Basics

Not So Secret Adsense Basics

Writen by Tina Stephen

Despite what all the Adsense gurus will tell you, there is no huge secret to using Adsense. What all the ebooks and services tell you is exactly what you can find out from Google Adsense themselves or from doing some research on the Internet.

If you are new or relatively new to Google Adsense you might want to take into consideration the following basic tips:

1) Blending... The best way to get anything out of Adsense is to blend the ads within your website. Make them look like they are a part of your site. Use the same color of your site links for your Adsense ad links.

2) Placement... Google had given you an outline of what areas within a web page perform better as apposed to other areas. Use this as a guideline to placing ads within your own web pages. The trick is to experiment with different areas and see which areas perform better on your website. Remember no two websites are created equal, so what might work on someone else’s website might not work on yours.

3) Ad Limit… Google allows you up to 3 ad units and one link unit, along with up to two search boxes. Use as many as you can on your website without making it look cluttered.

4) Channels… Channels allow you to track the performance of your ads within your site through URL channels and custom channels. When you are setting up your ads to be placed on your website, make sure to use channels so you can know exactly which ad unit is performing. This is an invaluable tool, and one that isn’t used as often as it should.

5) Filtering Competition… with this feature Google allows you to filter out your competition of your niche area, allowing only complementary product and service ads to be placed on your site.

6) Content… Remember to keep your site updated with new contact as often as possible. The rule that I have heard is not more than a week between updates. New content brings visitors/customers back, which increases your Adsense revenue.

You’ll find these 6 tips just about everywhere you look on the Internet. They’re pretty basic because they work for everyone.

The only secret to Google Adsense is tracking your results and experimenting, along implementing these six tips.

How To Earn More With AdSense

How To Earn More With AdSense

Writen by Jennifer Clason

Google AdSense is a great way to supplement your web site's income! So what exactly is Google AdSense? This is a program run by Google that pays you per click. You sign up for free, paste a little bit of code on your website and every time someone clicks the links on your site, you get paid a certain amount per click.

Some clicks are worth higher than others depending on the "keyword" that the ad is targetting. What does this mean? Google AdSense are "contextual based" ads, meaning that they display the links for people to click on based on the context of your website.

For example if you have a website about "tennis" then the ads Google AdSense will display will be all about tennis. So if the text on your site that Google is basing their AdSense ads on is for "tennis balls", then the keyword phrase "tennis balls" may be paying higher per click than "tennis racket".

Here are a few tips to get better earnings with Google AdSense:

1. Don't make your ads look like ads! People are so "banner blind" now that they'll skim right over your AdSense ads if you make them look too much like actual ads. By removing the background and the border of your ads and making them blend in with your own site's background, it will help your sales tremendously!

2. Don't click your own links! It may be tempting to earn that potential .03 for yourself but in the long run it's not worth it! Google has ways to detect "click fraud" and you WILL get caught and you'll forfeit all of your earnings thus far.

3. Put your ads close to your content! Don't put your content way up at the top and then put your AdSense ads waaaay down at the bottom. You won't get very many click throughs. Make sure your web content is actually integrated with your ads.

4. Have relevant keywords on your site! If your site is about "web site traffic" and you just keep mentioning the word "traffic" by itself, your Google AdSense ads may display ads for rush hour traffic, or traffic jams. Which has nothing to do with your website. Keep your ads relevant by giving your content good, thorough keywords.

If you just apply these simply and effective tips, you WILL see an increase in your Google AdSense revenue! While it's best not to put all your eggs in one basket and have AdSense as your only income earner, it is definitely a good way to make a nice little supplemental income on your website!

"Proven Advertising to Increase Traffic"

As I promised, first I'm going to tell you how to drive more traffic to your site, besides implementing the smart Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I will only give you the strategies that could give best results! Let's not waste our time going over those useless advertising strategies, OK?

"Google AdWords"

SEO is the best strategy to advertise your site and it's free. But, you do need some time to achieve the optimum position in Google. Following the steps I mentioned before in the previous lesson will basically get your site ranked high a lot faster.

I said "basically" because it also depends on the keyword or subject you pick. Remember the Supply and Demand concept? That's why you have to make a good decision on your keyword from the beginning!

If you pick the wrong niche, then you would have to start all over again...

But, there is also a paid advertising you can use to get to the first result page in Google. It's called Google AdWords. You've read my article on this, haven't you?

Google has a system that makes it possible to advertise to millions of people. For the first time in the history of the world, you could depositfive bucks, write a couple of ads, and instantly get access to over 100 million people - in less than 10 minutes!

I've used Google's AdWords system to generate traffic for my website, but it's something you definitely need to get the hang of, and there are some techniques you need to know before it really performs for you.

It's not always as easy as I just made it sound - AdWords has some nuances, and some people have a rough time at first.

Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is among the most powerful way to promote your business and Google Adwords is the best one according to me. The navigation is easy, the terms and conditions is friendly and to my knowledge, until today as I write this course, there are about 25 million searches in Google for every single day...!

Google AdWords is too confusing for some marketers, because you must have a relevant pulling ad. But once you master the strategy, this kind of advertising could drive significant traffics to your site.

Sometimes, by tweaking your ad a little could make a huge difference in your CTR. You can also read many AdWords strategies in my articles collection, because we actually need a special lesson on this.

How Pay Per Click Search Engines Work

How Pay Per Click Search Engines Work

Writen by Anne Ahira

Pay per click search engines are an effective way to attract cheap, targeted traffic to your website. The best and most popular pay per click search engines are Overture (GoTo) and FindWhat.

So, how do these sites work?

Advertisers bid on search result words and phrases. A Pay Per Click (also known as Pay Per Ranking, Pay Per Placement or Pay Per Position) search engine enables you to list your site at the top of the search results according to the keyword bid.

You list your website by selecting keywords that refer to your product or service. For each keyword you determine how much you are willing to spend. The higher you bid, the higher you will appear in the search results.

In pay per click search engine, you only pay for clicks or click throughs to your web site. Pay-per-click search engines play an important role in driving traffic to your site because you only pay for actual clicks. It is risk free and a cheaper alternative to listing with the bigger search engines.

Five Signs of Click Fraud

Five Signs of Click Fraud

Writen by Adam Sullivan

The number one sign that you may be experiencing click fraud is that your pay-per-click campaign costs are continuing to rise while your online sales are not meeting expectations. Sometimes if a keyword is too broad you may also experience this. If your cost per click is really sky rocketing then you are most likely experiencing click fraud. Click fraud usually happens to people who are in a number one position or who are competing for a highly contested keyword.

The number two sign of possible click fraud is that your conversion rate for paid searches are lower than the conversion rate of your free listings. Somebody probably wants you out of the way as far as competition goes. If your keywords are the same for free listings and paid listings your conversion rate should be almost the same.

The third sign of click fraud is that the cost-per-click for each of your best performing search terms have been steadily increasing. If you are paying more and the performance of the best search terms are plumeting then this is most likely click fraud.

The fourth sign is that you suspect your competitors are deliberately driving up your costs by generating fraudulant clicks. The internet is a competitive market and I don't think people should be accused of click fraud without reason. Unfortunately there are dishonest people out there.

The last reason is that you do not have a tool in place that is specifically designed to catch click fraud. Tools may help, but knowledge will be more helpful. One way to avoid click fraud is to not compete for the number one position of keywords, especially highly contested keywords. Be careful and knowledgeable. Every click counts.

Find Your PPC Niche

Find Your PPC Niche

Writen by Paul Flintoft

Pay per click (ppc) advertising can be costly. If you take the standard approach i.e. bidding for popular and competitive keywords, then you're open to high costs and potential click fraud. I know this from experience.

When done correctly, ppc advertising can be a great way of driving targeted traffic to your site, therefore creating more qualified leads. This is especially beneficial if you're selling high end or high margin products or services. It can also work if you're promoting a business opportunity.

Goggle and Overture are two popular ppc search engines that I use and several years of experience have taught me the following points for success:

1) Have a nice, well written website. It's great generating traffic, but if your site is poor quality, the traffic is wasted.

2) Brainstorm a list of keywords. Think 'what type of people do I want to attract and what kind of things might they type into the search engines?’

3) Think of variations on those keywords that are not so obvious. Examples could be, instead of 'local property' try 'cheap property in mytown' or instead of 'web design' try 'good value web design'. The list could be virtually unlimited.

4) Group your keywords into related groups.

5) Decide on your daily / weekly budget and start small.

6) If you’re going to bid for popular keywords, just switch them on for a certain part of the day, or a certain day of the week – don’t leave them running all the time otherwise your account will deplete very quickly and you’re more subject to click fraud.

7) Add a conversion tracker to your site so you know which keywords are actually turning into sales.

8) Monitor your campaign and tweak as necessary.

Here are some pitfalls to avoid:

1) Don't bid for the most popular keywords - my rule of thumb is not to pay for than 50p (approx. $0.80) per click.

2) Don't be tempted to spend more than you can afford.

3) Work out your ROI (return on investment). Does the change in sales / business justify the cost on ppc advertising?

4) Give it time and monitor your stats every month.

As more people start to use ppc search engines to promote their business, then it will become more important to find niche keywords. Play it smart and it will be an important and successful part of your marketing campaign.

Find Powerful Keyword Phrases in Five Easy Steps!

Find Powerful Keyword Phrases in Five Easy Steps!

Writen by Chet Childers

You may not realize it, but in the next few minutes you are going to learn one of the three most important steps to a successful pay-per-click campaign. That is, how do we find powerful keyword phrases in five easy steps? And the best of all, these steps are absolutely free!

As a start, you should focus on finding keyword phrases versus individual keywords. An individual keyword is usually too general in target and carries a higher bid price. For example, just think if you chose the keyword "toys" and how many types of toys might come up in the search results. We could have girl toys, boy toys, adult toys, child toys, youth toys, adolescent toys, pool toys, etc. If you were marketing toys for boys six to nine years old and bid on the keyword "toys" you would probably spend an excessive amount and get a number of click-throughs from individuals that are not in your target market.

So, how many keyword phrases do you need? Your goal should be a minimum of twenty keyword phrases with a target of seventy-five to one hundred. By the time you apply the matching options offered by the pay-per-click search engine, you should have more than enough keyword phrases.

Where do you find the phrases? Keyword phrases can come from a number of sources. As a first step, take a look at your website and start listing possible keyword phrases. Think about your Unique Selling Proposition for your product or service and add to your list of keyword phrases.

Who are your competitors? Go to your search engine of choice and do a quick search with your initial list of possible keyword phrases. Scan the search results and select several web sites. Read the text on the selected web sites and add keyword phrases to your list. If you would like to get detailed in your search, review the Meta tags for the title, description and keywords. The simple way to do this is place your cursor in the web site page, click the right mouse button and select "View Source."

Now, add more keyword phrases to your list.

Some of the best sources for keyword search phrases are the suggestion tools provided by the pay-per-click search engines. Two of the most popular are the Overture Keyword Selector Tool at http://inventory.overture.com and the Google Adwords Keyword Tool at http://adwords.google.com/select/keywordsandbox.

Go to the Overture Keyword Selector Tool and enter your keyword or keyword phrase in the search box. The tool will display for the past month: your keyword phrase, the number of searches, other keyword phrases containing your keyword phrase and the number of searches for the other keyword phrases. You should be able to add a number of keyword phrases to your list that perhaps you haven't thought of plus you get one other key piece of information.

You will learn the popularity of the keyword search phrases. If the number of searches is in the thousands then you have a large market opportunity for your product or service offering. Unfortunately, if it is a low number of searches you may want to reconsider your market potential. However, a pay-per-click campaign could be a quick market research project. There is no reason why low search volume phrases cannot produce a high click-through and conversion rate opportunity in a small, targeted market. Isn't that what people refer to as a niche market?

Now again, add more keyword phrases to your list.

Check out the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. This tool works differently from the Overture tool. Enter your keyword search phrase in the search box, select your language and country and review the two results. The first result is every keyword search phrase containing your keyword search phrase. The second result is similar keywords to your keyword search phrase. Once again, you will probably see some keyword phrases that you haven't thought about. Unfortunately, search volumes are not provided but, look at the number of possible additions to your keyword phrase list.

Again, add more keyword phrases to your list.

There is one additional keyword tool you might want to consider. This free tool is Good Keywords which can be downloaded at http://www.goodkeywords.com. This tool retrieves its results from the Overture search engine so you will get the same information as the Overture Keyword Selector Tool. However, it does provide features and functions which make it easier to cut and paste results to other documents such as Microsoft Word or Excel. Once the keyword phrases and search volumes are loaded in an Excel spreadsheet, it is very easy to sort, group and manipulate your keyword phrase possibilities.

By now you should easily have one hundred plus keyword phrases to select from. In fact, you may have a several hundred or even more than one thousand. Also, there are several other things you may want to consider such as synonyms to your keywords, typical misspellings and seasonal variations of your keyword phrases.

The task of finding, selecting and targeting keyword phrases is a significant key to success in pay-per-click marketing. Apply these ideas and tasks and you will be on your way to pay-per-click campaign success.

Are You PPC (Pay-Per-Click) Prejudiced?

Are You PPC (Pay-Per-Click) Prejudiced?

Writen by Bonnie Kotch

I was reading an article one day, that ironically I found while searching through Google for subject matter to write about. I wish I had bookmarked the page, but I didn’t. I do remember the content of the article:

Pay-Per-Click Fraud.

Now, being in and out of PPC advertising off and on as the mood strikes me, the title of the article hit me in the forehead like the snap of a strategically aimed wet towel. I believe I still sport the welt.

The article led you to believe that PPC was not only fraught with fraud, but the fraud was growing at an alarming rate with no controls to keep it in check! I read about instances of Competitors for keywords setting up “farms” of clickers to run out the PPC budgets of smaller businesses, ad copying, hackers using “click bots”, and link spamming. The two giants (Google and Yahoo), who also offer a way for people to earn by placing those same PPC ads on their sites to get paid for each click and cheating abounds! There is no way to stop it or track it! Well, there are ways to track it, but little is being done to stop it. And it will only get worse before it gets better.

The article definitely gave the impression that pay-per-click search engines not only had no effective way to stop click-fraud, but had no INCENTIVE to stop it. It’s money in the bank for them and unless you as the advertiser, are vigilant in closely monitoring and analyzing your traffic (looking for too many clicks from the same domain, for example), you are high and dry with as much as 35%-50% of your traffic possibly being fraudulent! I don’t have time to baby-sit their business, do you?

After reading this article, I went searching for others (after pulling my PPC campaigns) and found the same consensus . . . PPC providers, especially the big guys, really did not, and will not care unless they start losing MANY advertising dollars. One site even estimated as much as $1 billion in click fraud across all search providers combined! Bill Gates could probably afford to lose that much but Google and Yahoo won’t refund that to advertiser/victims.

It was also popular belief that PPC fraud-eliminating technology (if the search engines had any incentive to research it) is way behind the brilliant, bored and malevolent hackers and their motivation to “stick it” to the “man”.

Will Pay-Per-Click die in the throes of key word competition and click bots? Not anytime soon. I can tell you that I, as an advertiser, just can’t wrap my mind around the need to use a marketing method that is that rife with fraud. That’s MY money! There ARE better and more effective ways to make it work for me. PPC is not the only means to accomplish the desired end!

Do not despair. Although the popular and quickly visual advertising method that it is, there is still the good old fashioned site submission. You remember! The FREE ones! Google still takes free listings and many of the popular directories still take free listings and guess what? If you bone-up on keyword phrases and place them strategically on your web site, get some good back links with other web sites with similar keyword concentration, you can STILL get on the first page of the search results! It takes time and there is an art to it, but given some patience, you can benefit two ways . . . Traffic from those sites, and link popularity ranking in the search engines.

I’ve also noticed a few interesting alternatives popping up on the internet that should make some smaller businesses very happy. Let’s take a look at some of those:

1. Articles, if you write them, can still bring in traffic. I watched a brand new site of mine practically dominate 8 pages of Google search results for my chosen keywords within days. And every one of those articles had a link to my web site in my byline.

2. Affiliating your site. Do you sell a product or a service? Set yourself up as an affiliate manager. There are many sources out there to get affiliate manager software, or set it up through an affiliate network like CJ.com or Commission Source. Have hundreds or thousands of other people with a link on your site and pay only per sale or per lead. You will have much better ROI and it’s faster than writing web site owners asking them to exchange links to build up link popularity.

3. CPA advertising – There are tons of list owners, e-zine owners, newsletters, membership websites and the like that offer CPA (cost-per-action). Some of the most profitable campaigns I’ve ever run were through a list owner. Pay a deposit to get the campaign started, then a percentage of each sale.

4. Ad Swapping – Many think this is limited to e-zine advertising . . . it is not. It’s along the same lines as link exchanging. Dating sites and Horoscope sites do it all the time. Endorsement swapping is another way. Find a complimenting web site or business and agree to endorse each other. No money spent, and a lot of possible profit!

5. Something I’d like to see more of, like Snap.com’s approach. They have pay-per-click, but they have also implemented a CPA alternative to search engine advertising that currently does not cost you anything to start your campaign. You are charged only when you have a sale or a lead and they don’t bill you until you reach your first $100 dollars in campaign cost. (This may change and they may require a deposit as Snap has new owners, but currently, you can start your CPA campaign free).

6. Press Releases are a lot more cost effective than PPC advertising. It could also help you with link popularity.

7. RSS Feed is currently free to submit to most search engines and web sites picking it up will help you in search engine ranking.

8. Leads – Many of the big marketers buy leads and import them into auto responders. I personally don’t like the spam ramifications of doing this, but many lead promoters now offer to send them to a landing page, where the interested parties opt themselves in. Many top earners I know ONLY market this way.

I can remember as little as six years ago, PPC search engine advertising was just getting started. In six short years it has grown into a revenue monster for the search engines. There are currently over 500 of these “pay-per-click” search engines and amazingly, except for the top tier search engines, most of them have very little of their own traffic.

I have also talked to people who LOVE PPC search advertising and swear by it. However, if more noise is not made about PPC fraud, less is going to be done about it. It is your advertising dollars at stake. It is getting harder and harder to get good key word ranking and it is getting more costly. The millions they generate from it should be invested in better security. As it stands now, they will not even admit there is a sizable problem. Just my opinion, but I’d rather go with an advertising source that has better regard for it’s customers money. Until they do, consider me PPC prejudiced.

About Google Adsense

About Google Adsense

Writen by Thomas Seifert

With Google Adsense a webmaster can earn money by adding the Google Adsense code to their websites and blogs. Google started this program in mid 2003. Today there are millions of websites which have these ads placed on their websites. There is no limit to the amount of money you can earn through clicks. Google pays every month.

You cannot predict how much you can earn from clicks, as it depends on how much the advertisers pay per click for Google Adwords. For instance if there are 3 Google Ads shown on your website, then the pay you can receive per click will not be the same for each ad. It may be different.

Who can join Google Adsense program? Anybody who has a website can join Google Adsense program except websites like gambling, adult related sites etc. If a person does not have a website one can start a blog and create an own webpage and place Google Ads to start earning. There are more than 150,000 Google Adwords advertisers today and the advertisers list is increasing daily. Every website owner wants to sell or promote his product and services. The internet is one of the best ways to promote them.

Google Adsense rewards you for creating sites rich in high-quality, focused content. Those are the sort of sites that make the internet a better place. Those sites build traffic and trust, establish credibility and effectively presell your products or services.

There are many publishers who have been making thousands of dollars with Google Adsense. Websites that have lots of content should always try Google Adsense. Even if you do not have a website, you can start a blog and add your Adsense to the blog to start earning.

7 Ways to Get Super Adsense Income - Tried and Tested

7 Ways to Get Super Adsense Income - Tried and Tested

Writen by Amish Mody

Before starting this topic let me tell you that I am not in the top adsense earners or the so called 'premium publishers', but i do have a decent income from Google adsense program. Its very simple to earn good money from this program. Your 15 year old kids are earning 2000$ monthly from it, so why could not you.

Its a myth that to you got to know all the technical stuff and should be a programming guru to earn off that much from Google adsense. Its totally unrealistic, but all the premium publisher or at least most of them are general site owners with basic or amateur knowledge of technology. This is the real thing.
So you must be wondering what separates them from us, why do earn so huge amount of money while we just sit wondering what should be done to get to that point.

From my point of view, i would suggest the following golden 7 steps to ensure such fat income :

1. To start off, Google Adsense business should be treated as importantly as other businesses. Its totally unethical to call it as residual income. If you consider it as residual then you should not expect big cheques from it.

2. Secondly, track you improvements, changes in ad positioning, what’s working and what’s not. From today, track all the changes you do and their impacts, its the basic common mistake that we make, not tracking the changes we make. This helps in analyzing few things which works for us and which do not. Repeat the things next time you go about making a new site and stay away from the things which did not work this time. It helps in avoiding mistakes we make again and again.

3. The main thing these premium publishers do is take up some broad niche and then divide them into sub niches, each having its individual sites. For e.g., Sports, Cricket, Indian Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, Fan sites. They use specific automated site building tools to make up their instant niche sites. This automated tools are their main secret weapons of mass earnings.

4. Once you have exhausted making the 'n' no. of niche sites from the same niche, provide back links, links from each niche site to other one, and from each page to related page in other sites.

5. Now, designing your site requires one main point to be covered, make it very easy to browse as well as simple on the looks. Remember your main aim is to have click through on adsense rather then distracting your viewer to other things. Here the mantra is to 'Tell' not 'Sell' like any e-commerce site which will have emphasis on its product and will guide the viewer to their products. So make an informative site with enough content which will have adsense related matter.

6. Now comes the main part, the exposure of your sites, its easy and should be a gradual but steady process, make links from other related to yours, provide interlinking to your various related sites, make sitemap of each site and submit it to Google, submit your sites to various directories like Index rated Web Directory & SEO Care Directory. This should provide you steady and good traffic. In 2-4 months, you would be having enough traffic to have good amount of click-through.

7. After doing the tough part, you got to have patience on your part. Nobody and i mean nobody can earn 100$ on 1 day itself, wait for few months and you would be on your way to premium publisher. If you still want to earn more, repeat these steps with different niche and double your earnings.

This way, has been tried and tested by my friend and i have posted this article after interviewing him. His earnings averaged 10k $/month in past 6 months. Now that must be good enough for you, probably :)

Keyword Tracking

Keyword Tracking

Writen by Halstatt Pires

Keyword tracking allows a site owner to know what keyword searches are resulting in sales. Search term information can be logged into a database and presented to web site owners in a meaningful format. This data can be used to see which keywords are producing the most sales per search and to determine where to focus web marketing.

What Search Engine or Web Site

Knowing what search engine a sale has originated from allows site owners and marketers to know where their efforts are paying off the most. Good tracking and analysis software will also show what web site referred visitors. Knowing what sites are sending the most visitors allows site owners to give special attention to ensuring this traffic continues and increases. Knowing what referrers are generating the most sales further allows a site owner to hone his or her marketing efforts toward site referrals that result in the most sales.

What Keyword Was Searched For

Knowing what keyword searches are resulting in sales on a site allows the owner to focus more on those words. Perhaps you are marketing your site for two main keywords, "air hook widgets" and "air hooks." Using keyword tracking that traces keywords down to the sale ensures that you will know if searches for "air hook widgets" convert into sales more often than visits resulting from searches for "air hooks."

Sales Conversion Ratio of Keywords and Return on Investment

Tracking keyword searches through to sales allows site owners to determine the return on investment. If a web master spends $100.00 on the pay-per-click keyword "air hook widgets" and sells $1000 worth of product, his or her return on investment is likely very good. If the same web site owner spends $100.00 on the keyword "air hooks" and sells $200 worth of product, it is likely that the return on investment was not as great. Of course, if the markup or profit on one product is greater than on another, this must be taken into account.

Cost of Keyword

If a web marketer is using pay-per-click engines, knowing exactly what has been spent on a keyword, and what the return was, allows money to be put where it will do the most. Keyword searches, unlike many advertising mediums, are targeted by the viewer. For this reason, in addition to the accurate return on investment feedback, keyword marketing can be very worth the cost.

Added Benefit of Branding

Marketing your site by keyword in pay-per-click engines means that you will only be charged if a person clicks through your ad to your site. Pay-per-click ads and organic search listings have the often overlooked added value of showing the ad or listing many times over in addition to the clicks the ad or listing receives. Only a small percentage of people are likely to click on a keyword ad or search result listing, yet your ad or listing will be visible time and time again to people searching for terms you have bid on or marketed, increasing your site branding. Nonetheless, care should be taken to generate a compelling key word ad or page description, since in most cases you will want to receive as many clicks as possible.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you are spending money on search engine marketing, it is often well worth the effort to track your keywords through to sales. Without tracking your keywords, you will not know where your efforts are paying off. By tracking your keywords, you are able to put your efforts where they are paying off the most.

Internet Marketing Tips for Beginners

Internet Marketing Tips for Beginners

Writen by Waller Jamison

If you are just starting out online, you will be constantly on the lookout for internet marketing tips. You want to know the quickest way to get your business going and you don’t want to have to buy hundreds of e-books to get the information you need.

The problem is that your search for tips can leave you overloaded with information. You’ve probably already signed up for every newsletter out there. Although there are many good free email newsletters available, you’ll soon find yourself swamped with advice – some of it conflicting.

And you’ll find that every marketer and his dog is offering you the best product and in fact you may open your inbox to find that 20 people are trying to sell you the same thing at the same time!

So how can you choose the best way forward? The secret is to focus. Find something which is not too complicated – something which you feel comfortable doing. Look for a method which is working for other people and then concentrate your efforts on that, until you have achieved your first goal, which could be something fairly modest like $200 a week.

Some areas in which other people are making money are: creating and selling digital products, selling goods on E-bay and affiliate marketing.

E-books, audios and videos can be created easily and cheaply and once they are set up online, can be downloaded automatically as soon as the customer pays. The downside is that they take time to produce and you’ll need to do a fair bit of market research beforehand to make sure your product will sell.

E-bay is an increasingly popular way of making an extra income, but does require buying products and then posting them once they have been sold.

Affiliate marketing is probably the easiest starting point for anyone who is new to the internet. Someone else has done the market research and produced the product, the sales letter and the marketing materials. One of the best internet marketing tips is to focus on someone who is successful, learn from them and track your results. Once you are successful with someone else’s product, you can apply the same internet marketing tips to your own digital products.

Internet Marketing - A Business Promoting Tool

Internet Marketing - A Business Promoting Tool

Writen by Daya Vincent

Internet marketing plays an instrumental role in connecting potential customers with good rich content of the website that states company’s products and offerings. As a best promoting tool of products and services, it increases web site traffic, thus making more sales with minimum cost. It can be stated as a mix of interrelated activities focusing on the right audience directly or indirectly. It allows users to achieve the make more, work less goal.

Internet Marketing can also be seen in various formats, important ones are B2B andB2C. In B2B model companies do transactions, collaborations or other interactions with each other whereas B2C involves selling directly to the end consumer. B2B can be defined as doing business electronically and it plays a crucial role in today’s digital economy. A yet another model but less frequently used is peer-peer where individuals transfer goods and services between themselves.

When compared to other marketing strategies such as printing brochures, producing television or radio advertisements or managing a call centre, Internet marketing presents reduced costs and storage costs. An overnight 24/7 internet promotion provides greater visibility. On contrast to other business promoting tools, internet marketing provides an advantage of the content being enduring. Like a coin has two sides, it has some disadvantages too. The cost of online marketing that includes software, hardware, and website design may be higher when compared to other means. And most people like live interaction while buying products. Sometimes transaction across sites may not be secure. There are so many pros and cons for internet marketing. But you can easily overcome them by considering each when creating them.

Optimization of website is essential for deriving internet marketing benefit to its full extent. This phenomenon allows websites to appear in the top results returned by the engine’s for the product or information that has been searched for by the potential customer or client.

is a matter of knowing where to go to get the information needed
to get started. Internet Marketing is the term used for marketing
your business effectively on the Internet.

Many online businesses fail not due to lack of knowledge or
resources, but because they aren't marketed properly. The
Internet does not respond to traditional marketing methods the
way a brick and mortar business would. The bottom line is, if you don't know Internet Marketing, then you need to hire someone that does. This is true because it's better to start your Internet
Marketing campaign off right in the first place than to try to go back
and correct it once you already have a viable web presence. This
can be both costly and time consuming, and, as is the case with
most Internet Marketers, you are probably short on both time and
money. To start your online business, you must do the following:

* Decide what products or services you want to offer

* Get a reliable, knowledgeable web hosting company

* Design and build your website

* Develop an Internet Marketing Plan

* Implement the Internet Marketing Plan

Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, it is if you have someone to do all
that work for you, and the money to pay them. However, if you
are short on money, you will need to do some of the work yourself.
The fact is that a majority of Internet Marketers do most of the
work for their sites themselves, unless it is too technical and out of
their realm. Below are some of the steps involved in basic Internet
Marketing:

* Optimizing your Website

* Getting Reciprocal Links from other, relevant sites

* Organizing an article/press release campaign (for one-way links)

You will probably be surprised to know that it is possible to get at
least some of the above services all in one place. For example,
having a knowledgeable web hosting company is one key to
effective Internet Marketing. Your web hosting company may also
offer web design services , and be able to help you design and
build a viable website. Ideally, the company you choose for web
hosting should also have Internet Marketing expertise. This is
especially important if you are new to the world of Internet
Marketing.

Deciding to start an online business can be a daunting task. By
enlisting the right professionals to help you, your Internet
Marketing campaign will have everything it needs to make your
business successful right from the start.

Internet Marketer - Are You Guilty Of Missing Out 40% Of The US Population In Your Online Marketing

Internet Marketer - Are You Guilty Of Missing Out 40% Of The US Population In Your Online Marketing

Writen by Peter Lim

As an internet marketer, have you ever considered what segment of the population by age is your target market?

Fair to most established marketers and gurus, it is widespread common knowledge that they teach a wide variety of marketing methods and techniques, chief of which is the need to identify a hot market product that can sell like crazy. And to do so, we go to extra effort to identify the products with the highest keyword searches and the least pages online, to get a competitive edge over other marketers who are selling online similar or equivalent products.

But perhaps we have missed what can be the most lucrative market segment by age in the whole American market.

Let me show you why.

Firstly, there is a fixation by online marketers to push their products to the age group 18-to-34 years with the understanding that they are the younger set who are computer literate and can take to the internet and have little or no qualms about buying online.

But consider this - The US Census Bureau indicates that 40% of the US population is 50 and older, and this group holds 75% of the nation's financial assets, and this same group did all 55% of all consumer spending!

Indeed, the younger set of old are now the senior citizens, and many older internet users are getting more internet savvy to "trust" the internet and to buy something online. It is no surprise that a recent Nielsen survey showed a growth in this figure -27.4 million people aged 55 or older brought something online during the last 6 months, improving from the figure of 26 million a year ago. Many older "folks" are now learning to use the internet.

If you have been targeting only the younger population, consider that most senior citizens were eager buyers in clothing, flowers and gifts, shoes, health supplements, travel plans a year ago.

Consider these as niche markets to the older population, and build some support system to help the less internet savvy to interact with your sales platform. Studies have shown that where there is an human support or contact number on your sales website, the majority of those using the service was aged 35 and above. It therefore makes sense if you are targeting this older population set to include an interactive contact number or email support on your website.

The older population set are not ancient yet, and they are not relics. Once they get more technological savy, this older population set can become the most loyal online buyers, and they are the ones who hold the purse strings and can enhance your bottomline.

How To Tap Into Your Prospects Mind!

How To Tap Into Your Prospects Mind!

Writen by Craig Garber

There are some things you really just "can't" imagine.

If you're a man, you just "can't" imagine what it's
like to be pregnant.

If you've never had to do this before, you really just "can't"
imagine what it's like to put your old pet dog down to sleep
for good. Trust me, it's one of the saddest things you'll
ever have to do.

And if you're heterosexual, you just "can't" imagine what
it's like being gay.

But one thing you can imagine, is... if you do enough leg-
work, that is... you really CAN imagine what it's like to
stand in your prospect's shoes.

And if you're selling something, I hope you're trying
to imagine this, harder than anything else.

Because therein lies the key to your future.

That's why 40 to 50% of my time and "energy" goes towards
"researching" whatever project it is I'm working on.

Another 40 to 50% is spent on the actual writing... and 10%
is spent on... "whatever".

And in case you're not too good with math, this means a HUGE
part of my life is spent learning.

Thank goodness I like to read and learn new things that are
going on out there in the world today.

So make SURE you know every single detail about who you're
selling to... and "what" you're really selling -- it's
where all your money is buried.

Imagine that.

Now go sell something,

How to Buy Advertising

How to Buy Advertising

Writen by Jess Huffman

Few things are as uncertain to a new home business owner as where, when and how to buy advertising. If you've started to research your advertising options you are already painfully aware of the costs involved. Costs that can, literally, put you out of business if not controlled. Yet, without some form of regular, effective advertising your business can stagnate and starve to death. How do you know what is right for you? In this article we'll look at some options, and some ways to measure effectiveness, that should keep you in the money and out of trouble.

Will Your Customer's See Your Ad?

Advertising is sold based on its reach. If a newspaper, for instance, has a circulation of 100,000 subscribers, ad space will be considerably more expensive than a newspaper with a circulation of 10,000 subscribers. The first reaches ten times more people. Reach can be confusing, however, and it is more accurately an indicator of selling price to the publisher than anything else. As the buyer you must first consider how closely the demographic profile of the publication's readers matches that of your customer before you worry about the reach.

Demographic profile may seem like a complicated concept. In this case it simply means the "people" (demos=Greek for people) characteristics of that publication's subscribers. Their income, age, gender, and education levels to name a few of the common demographics measured. Most first class publications gather this information and make it available as part of their sales presentation. Smaller, or less professional publications may have incomplete, or even no, data. If you can't get, or determine, the demographics of a publication's readership its probably a good idea to pass on it as an advertising medium for your home business.

Cheap Isn't Necessarily Inexpensive

Often new home business owners see cheap advertising, especially in smaller publications like community newspapers, or association newsletters, and think its a good buy when compared to ad space in larger publications. While the two publications in question may look like apples and oranges, there is a way to convert the apples to oranges and make a reasonable comparison. Simply divide the cost of the advertisement by the total number of projected readers. This will give you a "cost per view" of your ad in each publication.

Here is a simple example of the conversion at work. The Daily - circulation 100,000 -offers you a business card size ad, for one week, at $1000. The Community Weekly - Circulation 5,000 - offers you the same size ad, for one issue, at $50. Which is least expensive?

If you divide the $1000 cost of The Daily's ad by 500,000 (thats 100,000 circulation times the 5 days it will run), you get a projected cost of $.002 per view. If you divide the Community Weekly's cost of $50 by the 5,000 circulation (the ad runs once - its a weekly) you get a cost of $.01 per view. The $50 ad is actually five times more expensive.

This is a hypothetical example, of course. There are many things to consider like the fit of the Community Weekly's demograhic compared to The Daily, and the fact that the Community Weekly will likely have a few more views than the initial 5,000 subscibers. That's because it will sit in a few waiting rooms until the next issue comes out, but this isn't usually enough to make a big change in the cost per view.

Tracking

The most essential tool in your analysis of ad price and effectiveness is tracking. The cost per view, and demographic match are crucial in making your initial decision to try a publication. The acid tests for continued advertising in any medium are cost per call, and cost per sale. Two important measures you can't get without running some test ads and carefully tracking the response rate for each advertisement you run.

There are many ways to track response rate. The ad can request that caller ask for a specific individual by name. When a call comes in for Mr. Bishop, for instance, you know they saw the advertisement in The Daily. You can ask that orders be directed to a specific department. When an order arrives addressed to "department CW100" for instance, you know that order came from your ad in the Community Weekly. A less exotic, but very effective method, is to simply ask each caller, "Where did you hear about us", and then enter the answer in your tracking software.

Once you have your tracking results use the same type of calculation you emplyed in determining the cost per view before you ran the advertisement to arrive at a cost per call and cost per sale. Divide the cost of the advertising by the number of calls it generated to get the cost per call. Divide the number of closed sales that originated with the ad by the cost to arrive at the cost per sale.

In the end, it is cost per sale that matters. No matter what the cost per view, or cost per call work out to be, your best advertising medium will always be the publication, radio staion, or TV station that provides the lowest cost per closed sale. You can't find that out, however, without running a test ad campaign and good tracking.

Getting Tough with Yourself

Getting Tough with Yourself

Writen by Elias Georgi

Many of us leave the nine-to-five grind in hopes of finding more freedom and greater financial rewards by operating our own home businesses. One of the most attractive elements of making that transition is the prospect of not having a boss.

After years in the workforce taking orders from others, the idea of being the primary decision maker and final authority is incomparably attractive.

Unfortunately, it is far too easy to lose track of the fact that you will still have a boss. You will be your own boss and as strange as it may sound, you will have to learn to be tough on yourself!

There won't be another supervisor, upper management or other team members to pressure you to perform. Instead, you will need to rely on your own self-motivation and discipline. That's right, discipline.

We'd prefer to think of running a home business as an exercise in constant flexibility. We envision days spent watching the money roll in while we wear our bathrobes and enjoy a morning coffee. We think back to days chained to our desk in "regular jobs" and relish the chance of being able to escape for a day trip or round of golf at will.

All of those things are possible, especially after you have developed a series of proven revenue streams and have created residual earning power. In the beginning, however, owning your own home business requires a great deal of focus and work. You will probably find that you need to be far tougher on yourself than any boss you had back in the regular workforce.

You'll need to tell yourself to buckle down and work when a nap seems more inviting. You will have to instruct yourself to concentrate and work harder when you might prefer to spend the day enjoying yourself. Use those dreams of lazy days and fun activities to motivate you, but don't start having them until you are truly ready. Establish your home business through dedicated effort and the days of fun and frolic will follow, all on their own.

Getting tough with yourself and pushing yourself to success is essential. By taking your business seriously and staying focused on your goals, you can position yourself to enjoy relaxing days and long vacations later. In order to get to those goals, however, you will need to apply a great deal of pressure to yourself.

As you grow your work at home business, resist the temptation to "take it easy" on yourself. You may be the boss and the employee, but you cannot afford to neglect either of those roles. Expect great things and tremendous effort from yourself, and then deliver both. If you do, you will find that working at home can be both lucrative and personally rewarding.
